This is the website and blog of “Higher Education? How Colleges Are Wasting Our Money and Failing Our Kids and What We Can Do About It,” one of the most widely reviewed non-fiction books of 2010-2011.

“Higher Education?” now exists in three formats beginning with a hard-cover from Times Books/Henry Holt, now in a fourth printing. There is an e-book available from Amazon and from Barnes and Noble. Finally, as of August 2, 2011, families can buy a high quality trade paperback from St.Martin’s/Griffin at an affordable price.

This new edition includes updating of statistical data, a new “Afterwords,” on all we’ve learned since August of 2010 when we first published the work and an expansion of our popular “Schools We Like” chapter. In many ways, this is a new book.

All versions of "Higher Education?" ask what students and families receive for the approximately quarter of a million dollars four years at a top-tier American university cost. With many prestigious universities, despite an ongoing recession, ordering continued tuition hikes, with the rate of student debt now exceeding the national credit card debt, we ask, “How did a college degree become the second most expensive purchase families will make in their lifetimes—and is it right to saddle 18 year olds with such a crushing expense?”

Plus: “Are young people getting good value for their enormous investments?”

We hope that our book in all its forms will continue to trigger discussion. We are pleased to learn that it has been useful to parents of high school students, to the students themselves as they negotiate their academic lives and to professors of higher education who are using it in their classrooms.

With a system this large and complex, we certainly don’t have all the answers. But we’ve tossed a few pertinent, and impertinent questions out into the public square and we've helped jump-start a long overdue discussion.
